COOPER
COOPER
Deaf Male Neutered 2 year old old Boxer
Cooper is a 2 year old , Deaf , Neutered Male Boxer who was scheduled to
be euthanized at the Holmes County Dog Pound 18 months ago
Cooper is a very sweet , active, energetic young dog who hadn't had much training
in his life before arriving at C.O.D.A.
Cooper was picked up running stray in Holmes County Oh with no prior history
available on him
Cooper found himself in dire straights as Holmes County is an Ohio Kill Shelter
We were contacted by a Holmes County Volunteer at the Animal Shelter to help
save Cooper's life since he had been
at the shelter for more than four weeks without any interest in him by adopters
or boxer rescue organizations
Thank goodness we were able to find a loving foster home willing to offer
Cooper a second chance at life so that we were able to save his life
Thanks to our wonderful CODA Foster parents Mike and Lisa in Akron for agreeing
to foster Cooper to save his life
We were filled here at our main facility when the plea for help for Cooper
arrived
So without the help of our wonderful foster homes dogs like Cooper would be
dead instead of happily playing
and learning house manners
Cooper caught a ride to Cleveland from the shelter courtesy of our wonderful
Board Member Jon Drake
Cooper's first stop when he arrived in Cleveland was at his first very temporary
foster home where he was able to run and play for a while
and received a good bath, before settling in for the night
Cooper was very thin , had a sore spot in his left front paw and needs to
learn proper play interaction with other friendly dogs
and also needs major work on his leash manners
He is very loving with humans but was somewhat unattentive which is a common
problem with incoming older deaf dogs
who haven't been taught " sign language" communication with their human caretakers
during their very important formative first six months of life
All that is now in Coopers past because Cooper wonderful Foster Parents Lisa
and Mike have turned Cooper into a very well behaved dog who knows many sign
commands and Cooper has attended numerous adoption events during the summer
of 2010 and was a totally well behaved darling for all the events. Cooper's
first stop the morning after his arrival at C.O.D.A. was at our Vet's office
to be examined by Dr. Brian
Dr Brian diagnosed the following health issues with Cooper
Cooper has a slight heart murmur and an upper respitory infection which could
worsen with hard play and running
So Cooper was prescribed antibiotics and crate rest for t two weeks with controlled
exercise sessions
Cooper also had a major digestive tract upset and was experiencing severe
diareah
Cooper was on a special diet of boiled hamburger and rice for a few days along
with his stomach medication
Cooper is now up to date on his DHLPP and Rabies Vaccinations
Cooper's intial vet bill = $130.00
After all the excitement of getting out of the shelter alive and visiting
the Veterinarian
Cooper then rode with his temporary short term foster mom to his foster home
and to get some rest and start his medications
Cooper rode pretty well in the car coming in from the shelter but pulled
like a maniac on a leash when he first arrived. Cooper is now a breeze to
walk on a leash thanks to his wonderful deaf dog experienced foster parents
who have been fostering Cooper for the last 18 months in Akron Ohio
UPDATE 7/24/09
Cooper required a visit to see our vet today due to frequent urination issues.
Xrays revealed that Cooper had an enlaged bladder. So urine was sent to the
lab for anaylsis and Cooper iwas given medications for the next week . He
was prescibed antibiotics and metrozolenol
Cooper Vet Bill today totalled $162.00
Cooper Foster parents report that his leash training is coming along nicely
and Cooper has learned some basic sign language commands such as " sit", "
lay down" , " no",
Cooper is doing better getting along with the other dogs at his foster home
but still would prefer to be the spoiled only dog as he really does crave
human affection and attention
We found out Cooper had a microchip in him that traced back to the Ashland
County Dog Shelter
When we contacted Ashland County Dog Shelter they provided us with the names
and contact information of the people they had adopted Cooper to from their
shelter
We called them to let them know we had Cooper in our rescue program
The Ashland adopters , adopted Cooper, tied him outside on a chain, he broke
the chain several times, so they just let him escape, didn't bother to look
for him and could have cared less that Cooper was days from being stuffed
into a gas chamber at the Holmes County Dog Pound when C.O.D.A came to the
rescue
So poor Cooper understandably desires a lot of attention and affection as
this is probably the first time in his life that he has been allowed to be
part of a family situation and live indoors and receive the love and proper
care that every companion animal deserves
Cooper has a pretty high prey drive so cannot be adopted into a home with
cats, any small animals and dogs smaller than himself
Cooper is fine with dogs his size or larger but needs a firm, experienced
adopter who will continue with the wonderful training he has received from
his foster parents
