ZEUS

UPDATE 6/24/08
Zeus has been having several medical issues of late
The lenses in both of Zeus's eyes have broken free and he is being carefully observed for any signs of pain or glacoma
Zeus is currently on daily eye medication and appears to not be experiencing too much discomfort due to his eye lenses breaking free in his eyes
If this condition worsens Zeus may need to have his eyes removed and sewn closed to alleviate pain or glacoma in the future
( We are of course praying surgery doesn't become necessary because Zeus had a very hard time coming out of the anethesia after his bloat surgery)

Zeus is also having involuntary muscle spasms which cause him to sometimes have bowel movements before he can get up and make it to the door
to go outside to potty
Dr Brian feels that Zeus's spine and hips are now suffering from the horrid neglect and abuse he suffered by the owners who originally
surrendered him to CODA who housed him in an outdoor pen the first 3 years of his life.
When Zeus first arrived at CODA he couldn't even get up from a laying or sitting position and had much difficulty with his hips.
Zeus's hips improved dramatically after a year or so in our care , receiving proper care, nutrition and medical support
But Zeus is now approaching 8 years old and the early damage done is contributing to his difficulties now
Zeus was CODA's very first rescue dog and we have no problem with Zeus living out his life in our care
Zeus has grown to be our CODA ambassador for special needs dogs during the 5 years he's been in our care and Zeus
very much loves his foster caretakers and is treated and loved as if he is a permanent member of our CODA family
Zeus quickly wins the hearts of all who meet him in person and will live out his life here at CODA treated as a loved family member.

Adoption at this point in Zeus's life wouldn't make much sense as Zeus is very bonded to his human caretakers and the transition to
a new home would be too difficult for him both emotionally and with his many health issues would be a financial burden on any adoper
We're pretty sure Zeus decided on his first day here that he was quite content and happy for the first time in his life
Our Director personally has fostered Zeus since he arrived and Zeus will not listen to or trust anyone's voice commands except
our Director and her husband who have cared for him since his arrival

UPDATE 8/10/06
Zeus was rushed to Dr. Brian's today when he suddenly presented with blood coming out of his penis
Dr. Brian took a urine sample and gave Zeus several medications
We are awaiting the results of Zeus' urinalysis
Zeus has not experienced any further bleeding and seems to be feeling fine and urinating normally

Cost of todays visit- $52

UPDATE 9/9/05
Zeus is gaining weight nicely and continues to do very well
UPDATE 8/27/05
Zeus is doing wonderful. His staples were removed and he was very cooperative even though it hurt quite a bit
having so many staples removed from his abdomen/chest area.
His favorite vet tech Jason hugged Zeus and kissed his nose to help keep his mind off of the pain while his staples were removed while our Director and another vet tech helped to keep him calm and still
Zeus is very thin after this life threatening experience but his appetite is wonderful and we're working at
getting Zeus back up to his normal weight.
Zeus wants to be held and cuddled all the time even more-so than before he bloated
Zeus will be returning next week for a follow up visit with Dr. Brian

UPDATE 2PM 8/2/05
Update on Zeus our CODA blind Great Dane-

Zeus made it through the night with flying colors. I visited with Zeus at Gateway Animal Clinic in Cleveland Ohio this morning at 10 am. He had stood up several times this morning but the vet techs were not able to convince Zeus to step out of the cage because there was a little metal strip across the bottom by the door that raised up above the floor and Zeus had slid his paws under the metal strip when he tried the first time and then he thought there were stairs in front of him or a drop off so layed back down and wouldn't get back up for the techs to walk him or take him outside to use the bathroom.

He was still pretty groggy from the anethesia also.
When I walked in I was happy to hear everyone working say to me, " Oh good, you're here . Take him out for a walk" Those words were magic to my ears:)
I easily got Zeus out for his walk and he really had to urinate badly and it took him quite a while:)
He was still very wobbly so we walked back in and I got him settled back in his cage and puffed up his blankets so he could rest his head comfortably.
I stayed with him and stroked him and talked to him for quite a while and then told him to just relax and sleep all day and I'd see him this evening. I also let him know he did so good and that he's over the worst of it now and that we were all praying for him. He snoozed back off to sleep as I was leaving. Heart failure is a concern after a bloat/torsion surgery so please keep Zeus in your prayers.

where Zeus got a lot of loving and and helped do a lot of education with hundreds of people on living with a Blind Dog!

AKC REGISTERED NAME-SIR ZEUS THE GREAT

Zeus is a 4 year-old Blind Merle Great Dane

UPDATE:
Zeus was seen by the Veterinary Opthamologist on August 16th 2004. Sadly there is nothing that can be done to restore Zeus's vision. We found out that although Zeus has severe cataracts

Zeus has never been able to see and was born completely blind.
His eyes underneath the cataracts were never properly formed.

Zeus enjoyed the Road Trip to the Veterinary Opthamologists

Especially the rest stops!
Zeus is now having problems with calcification of his lense in his right eye and is on steriod eye drops
We are hoping that Zeus's lens will not break free necessitating the removal of his eye.
Zeus is a wonderful sweet natured Great Dane that loves everyone he meets,

Zeus gets along fine with all the dogs and cats in his foster home and loves to ride in cars.
Zeus loves going to the Vet's office and has a lot of friends there.
Zeus is a hit wherever he goes because of his super personality.
Zeus also enjoyed a trip to Petsmart recently and was a very good boy

Zeus loves to play with dog toys but most especially loves a jumbo bully stick or big knuckle bone to chew on
Zeus gets around great in his foster home and his foster mom has to constantly remind Zeus to slow down
When he attempts to run out the door with all the other rescue dogs to play
